350 golfers are set to fight for honours in the IBB Golf Club Captain’s inaugural tournament which begins today at the International Golf and Country Club in Abuja
In a press conference, the chairman, Local Organising Committee, Dr Olabanjo Obaleye revealed that the new executive of the club are using the tournament to kick start their tenure which began in April.
“The inaugural tournament of the new executive led by Senator Emma Anosike has made provision for 350 golfers and about 50 lawn tennis players. We have a lot of trophies and consolation prizes as well.
“First and foremost, the executive tenure of IBB Golf Club is yearly, from April to April. Members of the new EXCO were elected this year and this is their first event to introduce them to the world, that this new EXCO means business and they are going to bring the various opportunities golfing event offers that are bigger than what we have been experiencing before,” he said.
He further stressed that the tournament will comply with the COVID-19 protocols set by the government as golf is one of the sporting events that will not violate the protocols.
“We have seen how people have used the game of golf to correct some of their psychological problems. Many people have a wrong opinion that golf is an elitist game but when you see people play, you will know that you don’t need to be a millionaire to be a golfer,” he said.
The tournament starts today with the pro category, handicap 19-36 will play on Friday while handicap 0 -18 with guests and sponsors will take the centre stage Saturday which is the grand finale.
