The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Boboye Oyeyemi, says 30 percent of truck drivers in Nigeria have failed vision tests conducted by the FRSC.

Oyeyemi said most of the truck drivers had eyesight challenges, making it more dangerous for them to drive at night.

Fuel scarcity looms as truck drivers withdraw service

Passengers, drivers bicker over forced fare

He said this in Abuja on Thursday at the 2020 Truck Renewal Conference themed: ‘Truck Renewal System: Ensuring Road Transportation Safety’, jointly organised by the Major oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAM) and the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO).

“We need to take action; 30 percent of drivers failed the vision tests we conducted.

“Most of the trucks on our highways do not have safety valves, we must enforce the law of no safety valves, no loading of products,” he said.

MOMAN Chairman, Adetunji Oyebanji, said bout 80 percent of the over 10,000 trucks transporting petroleum products across the country lacked critical safety features needed for safe transportation of the products by road.

He said the association was in talks with NARTO to discuss issues bordering on fleet renewal, aimed at ensuring the replacement of trucks in the fleet of transporters “which do not meet the safety requirements designated for the transportation of dangerous goods, like petrol.”
