Three suspected armed robbers were arrested following an exchange of gunfire with police operatives at Jabi -Daki Biyu junction in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

CP Benneth Igweh, the FCT Police Commissioner, confirmed the incident to newsmen when he paraded the suspects at the command on Tuesday.

He said the incident happened around 10:45 pm on Sunday when a team of police operatives from Utako division led by the DPO, Victor Godfrey, came across the gang during a patrol.

He said the police operatives became suspicious and trailed a Golf vehicle being used by the suspected robbers.

He said, “Upon sighting the police operatives, the robbers opened fire on our men from the car, which resulted in a gun duel and three of them were arrested in the process.”

He said the suspects, Ibrahim Yakubu, Ugwu Monday Joseph, and Lawal Mustapha succumbed to the superior fire from the police.

According to him, the arrested suspects have confessed to having been operating within some locations within the city centre, even as he said some exhibits, which include two English pistols, two magazines, 49 live ammunitions, 3 torchlights and several charms were recovered from them.

CP Igweh further disclosed that eight suspects were also arrested during a raid on some black spots by a combined team of police operatives and a civilian joint task force led by the commander of the Rapid Respond Squad of the FCT Police Command.

He said the raid was carried out at Kabusa Panteka, where the eight suspects were arrested, adding that a trailer containing used car parts, armoured cables, one canter pickup truck, and two buses with one containing burnt armoured cables were recovered during the raid.

He added that five saloon vehicles, two Honda Accords and two Corolla cars, 14 inverter batteries and nine used cars were also recovered from them.

He said, “Suspects could not give satisfactory explanation on the exhibits seen in their possession and that they would be charged to court after investigations.”
