An Ado Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday remanded three men in prison for allegedly attempting to murder a policeman.
The accused, Adekunle Ariyo, 42; Adesogan Segun, 35; and Dada Taiwo, 20 are being tried for conspiracy, attempted murder and being in possession of firearms.
The Police Prosecutor, Insp. Caleb Leranmo, told the court that the accused committed the offence on May 27 in Ikole Ekiti.
He alleged that the accused, who were in possession of firearms, conspired and attempted to murder Cpl. James Jimmy.
Leranmo said the police got a distress call from the traditional ruler of Irele that some youths, who were armed with some dangerous weapons, were extorting money from passers-by in the community.
According to him, some police officers from Ikole were dispatched to the community and in the process, Jimmy was attacked and stabbed in the neck.
The officer is responding to treatment at the Federal Medical Centre in Ido, he said.
The offences contravened Sections 321, 324 and 403 (3) of the Criminal Code,Laws of Ekiti State 2012.
The prosecutor applied for an adjournment to enable him to duplicate the case file and send to the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Adesoji Adegboye, ordered that the accused should be kept behind bars pending advice from the DPP.
He adjourned the case until July 7 for mention.
