The 2nd edition of the Emmanuel Egbele Annual Scrabble Tournament (EEAST) will start today and end on Saturday, June 3 at the Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos.

The EEAST tournament is one of the events where players can garner rating points for the MGI Grand Slam in October.

The MGI Grand Slam is an elite Scrabble tournament at the end of every season.

According to the Technical Director, Khaleel Adedeji, players will be classified based on rating points in the Masters, Intermediate and Opens categories.

“There will be categorization of players based on the following cut offs: Masters 1400-above, Intermediate 1100-1399 and Opens1099-below.”

He further explained that, “a player can play up (moving one step up). For instance, Open to intermediate or intermediate to Masters. It’s imperative to know that an Open’s player can’t play in the Masters category,” Adedeji explained.

The winner of the maiden edition of the EEAST, Dokun Esan who overcame oppositions from over 80 players in Lekki in 2021 noted that the 2022 competition will be high considering the strategic planning and venue.

“It is very rare to win such a competition twice but God is wonderful” he noted.

Meanwhile, Egbele, whose name has been adopted for the tournament said “We should expect the best scrabble experience.

“We already know Nigeria is the best scrabble nation in the world and this fact was reinforced recently in the outing of the National Team at the West Africa Scrabble Championship (WASC) which took place in Ghana where we scooped nine out of the 10 top places. Most of the players who represented the country will be at the EEAST tournament.”
