250 athletes for 21km Bayelsa City marathon

About 250 elite athletes across the country are billed to take part in the Bayelsa City Marathon also known as Senator Douye Diri (SDD) 21-kilometer marathon race in Yenagoa this weekend.

Speaking with members of the Sports Writers Association (SWAN) in Yenagoa Tuesday, the initiator of the marathon race, Igbeta Odonkumo, disclosed that 50 athletes will also take part in the Teen Category for the State Secondary School Students in Bayelsa State and those who will be running for leisure racing in a 5-kilometer race.

This year’s edition of the Bayelsa City Marathon will be held this Saturday, February 10.

According to Odonkumo, 50 school bags would be handed to all participating 50 school athletes courtesy of the Gloria Diri Foundation.

He said the marathoners across the country and abroad have registered to participate in the race that attracts N500,000 each for the winner of the men and women’s events.

Odonkumo who is the Chairman of the Bayelsa Marathon Club hinted that Governor Douye Diri will lead a cast of government officials and dignitaries to grace the event.

In a response, Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Bayelsa State Chapter, Mr. Alambo Datonye praised the organizers of the Bayelsa City Marathon for initiating the event.
