At least 2300 corp members on Thursday took oath of allegiance to participate in the 2018 Batch C Stream I National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Benue State.
The ceremony which was performed by Governor Samuel Ortom, held at the NYSC orientation camp in Wannune in Tarka Local Government Area of the state.
Ortom who was represented by his Commissioner on Lands, Survey and Solid Minerals Engr. Bernard Unenge, urged the newly inducted corp members to imitate good examples of their predecessors in the scheme by contributing to the unity and development of the country.
The governor noted that the service corps members will be rendering would help bridge the skilled manpower gaps across the state, stressing that the formation of NYSC scheme in 1973 was meant to avail graduates opportunity to tell a richer tale of who we are as a nation; by acquiring a better knowledge of the Nigerian people.
He therefore emphasized the need for the corps members to acquaint themselves with their host communities cultures so as to completely discard all vestiges of ethnic chauvinism and all forms of nepotism in national life as they integrate freely among themselves and cultivate friendship that would last them a life time.
Ortom further allayed the fears of the corps members on security as he assured them that his government would ensure that they reside in safety all through their stay in the state.
“For the avoidance of doubt, our administration in conjunction with all security agencies in the state have put in place giant proactive measures to ensure the security and safety of all inhabitants of the state, with particular emphasis on work places and residential areas of corps members,” he said.
The governor on that note called on the corps members to take the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) seriously in order to unlock the doors to their fortune as he expressed optimism the new set would imbibe the noble ideals of the scheme.
Earlier, the State Coordinator of NYSC, Shicha Joshua Simon, called on the Batch C corp members to take their orientation programme seriously and to always remember that the scheme provides a platform for them to contribute their quota to the unity and development of Nigeria.
He added that the camp curriculum and training had been adjusted to meet the demands of circular life with particular emphasis on skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development and urged corps members to participate fully in all the programmes.
