23 elected council chairmen get certificates in Kaduna

Newly elected chairmen in the last Saturday’s local government election in Kaduna State have received their Certificates of Return from the Kaduna State Independent Election Commission (KAD-SIECOM).

It is worth noting that the local government polls generated mixed reactions in the state, as opposition parties rejected the results declared by the state electoral body, which stated that the ruling party won all the LGAs and councilorship seats.

During the presentation of the certificates at the Commission’s headquarters in Kaduna, KAD-SIECOM Chairman, Hajiya Hajara Mohammed, stated that the election was conducted across the state in accordance with the Kaduna State Electoral Law 2024.

She emphasized that this was the sixth time the Commission had conducted elections since its establishment in 2000, but notably, it was the first time elected council members would hand over to an elected council, making today’s event historic.

She said, “I feel highly delighted to be part of this remarkable occasion; a day of history, where certificates of return are being issued to those who won the just concluded 2024 Local Government Election.

“Elections have been contested across the state in accordance with the Kaduna State Electoral Law 2024.

“Let me take this opportunity to congratulate those who emerged as winners and remind them that the electorate decide through polls to give them the mandate to lead, and it is paramount that they live up to expectations.

“It is important at this point to recognize and appreciate the Permanent Electoral Commissioners, the Commission’s Secretary, Heads of Departments and Units, our field officers, i.e., electoral officers and their assistants, for their dedication and professionalism.

“This exercise would not have been possible without the contributions of the entire staff of the Commission. At this moment, I would like to acknowledge all categories of our ad-hoc staff who have shown passion and commitment to serve our dear state.

“This is the sixth time this Commission has conducted an election since its establishment in 2000. However, this is the first time that elected council members are going to hand over to an elected council, making today’s event historic.

“Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission is committed to conducting periodic elections, and this would not have been possible without the generous support of the Governor of Kaduna State, His Excellency Sen. Uba Sani, who believes in entrenching democracy.

“Before I close, I want to commend all the eight political parties that participated in this election; without them, there wouldn’t be a contest.

“As the elected officials soon assume office to discharge their mandates, the Commission will withdraw from public activities and engage in the post-election period where plans for improved elections will be set in motion.”

In response, the chairman-elect of Soba Local Government Area, Muhammad Lawal Shehu (MOLASH), noted that as chairmen of local government councils, they are the closest to the people at the grassroots.

He promised that they would implement their respective campaign manifestos to the letter and that they would not let the people down.

Shehu also expressed appreciation to Governor Uba Sani and the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership for their support, pledging that as local government chairmen, they would work together with the state government to complement the developmental strides of Sani’s government at the grassroots.
