The United Nations Rescue Services (UNRS) has said that Nigeria having 20 million of Africa’s estimated 40 million people below the poverty line is unacceptable and must be urgently addressed in the interest of future generations.

The International Chairman of the organisation, Ambassador Steve Midalah, said this on Wednesday in Abuja at a news conference and unveiling of ambassadors of the organisation to realise its objectives.

According to him, the organisation is committed to drastically reducing, if not eradicating poverty in the country, hence the activities and other plans to achieve that.

“One of the activities is the building of mass houses for those in abject poverty.

“We have concrete plans to achieve this, as those who actually needed it would be the beneficiaries.

“And this shall cut across the country,” Midalah said.

He said that the organisation has secured some parcels of lands in parts of the country, especially in the north to ensure the success of the mass housing in the country.

He also said that the involvement of Nollywood actress, King Tonto Dike, in the empowerment for poor women program of the organisation, showed the seriousness it attached to tackling poverty and insecurity in the country.

He said that the organisation was also out to boost rural housing scheme with a state government in the north offering the organisation 250 hectares of land for its mass housing scheme, especially at the grassroots.

He said the housing scheme is targeted at poor rural women who have been written off by society but will own houses to their name.

“We are also being offered a land to build 1,000 houses to boost affordable housing scheme for the Nigerian population in the FCT,” Midalah said.

On her part, Actress Tonto Dike said that her foundation will continue to make efforts to support humanity.
