The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) says the current housing deficit estimated at over 20 million has now become a national emergency that needs urgent attention from both the federal and the subnational levels.
At a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday to commemorate its 35th anniversary, the Chairman of CORBON, Dr Samson Opaluwah, emphasised the crucial role the building profession plays in Nigeria’s economic development, while reiterating commitment to tackle the deficit.
“Globally, the building and construction industry is primarily responsible for providing and maintaining infrastructure and remains a leading indicator of economic growth and current developments in a nation; Nigeria is no exception.
“However, the over 20m deficit is a national emergency that requires urgent intervention from government at all levels and professional bodies like CORBON. As such, there is a need for a responsive social housing programme to cater to vulnerable groups,” he said and stressed the importance of improving access to land and liberalising mortgage systems to empower youth towards homeownership.
The chairman had, at a separate event to induct 329 new members, urged them to uphold the values of professionalism and excellence in their work while urging states to enact planning laws.
