The Senate on Thursday passed for a third reading the anti-doping Bill seeking to prohibit Nigerian athletes from consuming performance-enhancing substances during or after sporting competitions.
This was sequel to the consideration and adoption of a report of the Senate committee on judiciary, human rights, and legal matters presented by its chairman, Senator Mohammed Monguno during plenary.
Recall that the Senate had on May 22, passed the Bill for a second reading.
The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio referred the Bill to the Senate Committee on Sports and asked it to report back to the committee of whole in two weeks.

The Senators on Thursday adopted the recommendations of the committee and approved that the Bill be read for a third time when it was put to a voice vote by the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, who presided over the plenary.
The Bill is aimed at domesticating and enforcing in Nigeria the international convention against doping in sports ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games in France.
Recall that President Bola Tinubu in a letter to the Senate had requested the lawmakers to pass the Bill. The Bill is titled, “National Anti-Doping Bill 2024.”
