2024 AMGA: Nigeria scoops 9 gold medals in Taekwondo

The Nigerian Armed Forces team has achieved remarkable success at the ongoing Africa Military Games at the National Stadium in Abuja, winning an impressive 11 medals in Taekwondo events alone.

The second edition of the games, which commenced last Monday, features over 1,625 athletes from 21 African nations, including Nigeria, Ghana, Tunisia, and Cameroon, competing across 20 events.

In Taekwondo, the Nigerian team dominated with nine gold medals, five of which came from Poomsae events. Notable gold medalists include Mohammed Yusuf (men’s -54kg), Rejoice Bisalla (women’s -46kg), Chinenye Ibeh (women’s -49kg), and Glory Anam (women’s -53kg).

In addition, Daniel Alexander earned silver in the men’s -58kg category, while Alassa Aminu took bronze in the men’s -63kg category.

The Nigerian contingent also shone in team sports, securing a bronze medal in football and silver medals in both the men’s and women’s basketball events.

Elsewhere, Tanzania claimed victory in the marathon event.

Speaking at the games, officials, including the Deputy Permanent Representative from Burkina Faso’s Embassy, praised the organizers for their seamless coordination and impressive execution of the event.

Currently, Nigeria tops the medal standings with 64 medals, trailing Algeria with 24 medals in second place and Tunisia with nine medals in third.
