2024 African Games opening ceremony holds today

Team Nigeria has already won two medals at the ongoing 13th African Games in Ghana just as the continental event kicks off officially today with the opening ceremony which is to be held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

It should be noted that some games such as Karate, Tennis had begun a few days earlier at various centers in the city of Accra.

According to the schedule, the opening ceremony will take place at the University of Ghana sports stadium with popular musician, Shatta Wale headlining the ceremony alongside other arts.

Meanwhile, table tennis star, Offiong Edem became the first to win Nigeria a medal after finishing in top three in the Women’s Singles event.

The 37-year old star caved in with 0-4 defeat to settle for a bronze medal against Egypt’s Allaeldin Wafik Dina.

Prior to this, she had defeated Kenya’s Juma Doreen 3-0 in the Round of 64 before defeating South Africa’s Sonday Rochica 3-0 in the round of 32.

She squared up against Egypt’s Hesham Marwa whom she defeated another 3-0 before losing 4-3 to Hesham Mariam of Egypt in the quarterfinals.

The poster boy of Nigerian table tennis, Aruna Quadri won silver in the men’s event for Nigeria’s second medal at the games.

Quadri who is struggling with form lost 4-3 defeat to Egypt’s Omar Assar in the final of the men’s table tennis singles event.

Assar took the first set 11-8, while Quadri who is currently the world number 14 ranked player, bounced back to claim the second and third 11-2, 11-2.

The Egyptian clinched the fourth set 11-7 before Aruna won the fifth set 11-9.

Assar then won the last two sets 11-9, 11-0 to claim the gold medal.

As at press time, Team Nigeria is currently placed second with two medals behind Egypt who have four medals. Algeria and Senegal are joint third on the medals table.

A total of 358 athletes are representing Nigeria in 25 events at the 2024 All Africa Games.

The games which started on March 4 will end on Saturday, March 24.
