2024 AACT: Nigeria targets victory, bids for 2026 hosting rights

Nigeria has announced its readiness to bid for and host the prestigious All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) in 2026, as confirmed by the President of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN), Evelyn Oyome.

In a chat, Oyome revealed that Nigerian female golfers will be heading to Morocco next week to compete in the 2024 All Africa Challenge Trophy, with a goal to win the tournament. A total of 72 participants are expected to take part, while Nigeria also plans to submit a bid to host the event in the future.

It is worth noting that Nigeria finished 6th in the previous edition of the tournament in 2022. Oyome pointed out that the lack of sponsorship has been LGAN’s biggest obstacle in both their quest to secure the trophy and in their efforts to host the competition in Nigeria.

She called on the Nigeria Sports Commission, corporate organizations, and well-meaning Nigerians to offer support to LGAN in overcoming these challenges.

“The objective of the tournament is for all Africa to come together and become one. We want to go to Morocco, win the tournament, and bid to host. It will be a great honour for Nigeria to host Africa. Nigeria hosted the 1996 and 2010 editions at the Ikoyi Golf Club, Lagos and the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja.

“For this tournament, we are going with 72 participants which includes Nigeria’s Iyaloja-General, Mujidat Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, Oyo former first lady, Chief Mutiat Ladoja and Chief Mrs Grace Ihonvbere is the Chairperson of the Nigerian delegation to the event. We are also seeking support from the government and private sector as well,” she said.

In the same vein, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, the President of, the Nigeria Golf Federation said that hosting the event in Nigeria would be a thing of pride for the country, adding that it also shows that Nigeria is taking the lead in terms of participation of lady golfers on the African continent.

The NGF boss also singled out Mrs. Ekanem Ekwueme for commendation who he noted was the first Nigerian Lady to become the trustee for the West & Central African Region of the African Golf Body AACTA (All Africa Challenge Trophy).

The International Golf tournament is a biennial continental ladies’ golf championship in Africa that had its inaugural edition in May 1992.
