Youths under the aegis of Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) have called on political parties to pick their presidential candidates for the 2023 polls from the “core South South” region.

Speaking at a press conference held at the DSC Permanent Camp, Udu council area of Delta state, on Sunday, the group noted that their interest in the presidency coming to the South South is irrespective of “political affiliation”.

According to the youths, a South South presidency will ensure unity and development of Nigeria.

Stressing that “political grabbers are causing an imbalance” for the Southeast, Southwest and North, the group said “the best way to avert the crisis is for power to go to South South. We are still using diplomatic channels to ease tension before the 2023 election”.

A statement signed by the national coordinator and secretary, Comrades Israel Uwejeyan and Bakpa Orehime, respectively, said “We will be faced with dire uncertainties if power goes to any of the above zones agitating for power, leaving us to strike a strategic partnership between the North and the core South South to balance unity of our nation.

“The core South South is the pivotal zone to bring about collective sense of security and national unity between all the geopolitical zones. We want to reiterate boldly that parties zone their presidential slot to the core Southsouth people who have all the qualities to emerge as the next president of Nigeria.

“If this demand by us is heeded to by the political parties and all parties involved, Nigeria will be on the right track of development, peace, progress and unity.”
