2023: ‘Why INEC should secure results using blockchain’

A judge of the Kogi State High Court, Justice Alaba Omoleye-Ajileye, has advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to protect its server using blockchain technology.

Justice Ajileye said this during a lecture in his honour as a retiring judge at the Rule of Law Development Foundation Friday in Abuja.

Speaking on the topic: ‘A-Z of the Regime of Electronic Evidence in Nigeria: Issues and Challenges’, the judge explained that the system can be hacked into and figures altered if the server was not properly protected for the elections.

“Between the polling unit to the INEC server, anything can happen because there are what I call ‘virtual bandits’; in fact, in one of my papers, I have described the virtual world as a lawless arena, where criminals will also be part,” he said.

He described the BVAS as the cornerstone of elections having been accorded supremacy over the manual register, adding that when it fails during the elections, the law has provided for a postponement to enable INEC to provide another one.

The coordinator of the foundation, Joseph Daudu (SAN), in a virtual speech, commended the quality of legal work done by Justice Ajileye which he said has contributed as an authority on the use of electronically generated evidence in the determination of a dispute.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief Judge of the FCT High Court, Justice Hussein Baba-Yusuf, recalled the work done over the years by the retiring judge while commending the foundation for organizing the lecture.

In his goodwill message, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), also commended the retiring jurist for his contributions to the development of law in Nigeria.
