2023: PDP raises concerns over post election violence

The national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Iyorchia Ayu, has raised concerns over the possibility of post election violence after the 2023 general elections.

Addressing a delegation of European Union led by Ambassador Samuella Isopi who visited him at the party’s headquarters Friday, Ayu said the party was worried about post election violence if the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) loses the election.

He said, “We didn’t use agencies of the state to stay in power. We conceded defeat, so when we win, we expect those who are currently in government to concede defeat because they are going to lose the next election.”

Ayu said the APC should not hang on to power and “create an atmosphere of instability in the country.”

“We hope that when they lose they also would willingly concede defeat and hand over power to the Nigerian people,” he said.

He also frowned at what he described as low level of registration of voters in the country, saying that a population of almost 200 million people has less than 5 per cent registered voters.

In her submission, Isopi said the visit was part of their regular consultations with all the stakeholders, actors and partners in the election process.

She also reaffirmed the support of the union in Nigeria’s democracy, and promised to work together with other stakeholders for the success of the process.
