2023: INEC to prosecute erring parties, politicians over infractions

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday said it was committed to prosecuting political parties and politicians found violating electoral timelines, as well as provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022, ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, said this in Abuja at the formal launch of the 57-page Yiaga Africa #WatchingTheVote Ekiti and Osun 2022 Governorship Report.

The event also witnessed a post-election dialogue involving the INEC, political parties, security agencies, civil society organisations and the media on ways to improve the electoral process and aid progressive and sustainable electoral policy reforms in the country.

Yakubu, represented by the national commissioner and chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, also said the commission was committed to the electronic transmission of results of elections.

He said the INEC would be courageous in conducting the 2023 general elections.

Yiaga Africa’s Board chairman, Hussaini Abdu, urged the INEC to learn from Ekiti and Osun gubernatorial elections, which were held in those states just after the 2022 Electoral Act was passed.
