The main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned as “reckless, irresponsible and unpardonable,” the comment by the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, where he said he was having a lot of fun.
The party said the comment by Emefiele, who also stated that Nigerians could go ahead and “have a heart attack” over the widespread anxiety in the country arising from his involvement in politics, also showed that he could no longer be trusted with sensitive election materials.

A statement by the PDP national publicity secretary, Debo Ologunagba noted that the comment by the CBN governor was enough to “trigger a nationwide restiveness, pitch Nigerians against the CBN, shut down the economy and destabilise the polity.”
The PDP, therefore, contends that despite Emefiele’s alleged withdrawal from the presidential race due to the pressure from the party, “he cannot continue as CBN governor, having become partisan as a card-carrying member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The CBN, which keeps all sensitive materials for elections cannot be trusted with the custody of such materials with a biased Emefiele at the helm of affairs.”
