Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has charged politicians to ensure their campaigns focus on developmental issues.
Director, Regulatory Monitoring and Enforcement Directorate, ARCON, Ijedi Iyoha, gave the charge in Abuja yesterday while addressing reporters on the sidelines of a public stakeholders’ forum themed, ‘Political Advertising in Nigeria: Regulations, Compliance and Enforcement’.

According to her, most politicians do not base their campaigns on developmental issues but on frivolities.
She said the forum was organised to sensitise them on the need to abide by the new ARCON Act in their communication materials.
She said, “If a politician is sending us campaign materials, they should not be talking down on their opponents. It should not be disparaging. Let it be issue-oriented. Let it be issue-based.
“What they want the electorate to do for them should be convincing and believable, not just bringing up a material and saying ‘Mr A, don’t vote for him, he embezzled money’ without substantiation or anything to tell us that yes, actually, Mr A embezzled money.”
