The Chief Host and Country Director, The Royal Commonwealth Society Nigeria Branch, Mr Blackson Olaseni Bayewumi, said the Commonwealth Essay competition was the oldest international writing competition for schools with thousands of young people participating annually.

He said the competition was an important way to recognise achievement, elevate youth voices and develop key skills through creative writing.

He said the competition was in two categories. While the senior category is open to people between 14 and 18 years old, the junior category is open to those under 14 years of age. He also noted that entries close on 30 June, 2022.

In his welcome address, President, Cradle 2 Harvard International School, Abuja, Mr Phrank Shaibu, stressed the need for people with sound educational foundation to run schools in the country.

“For you to run a school, you must do something right. You should have the capacity to do it; you should have something to offer. What makes great learning is when the learners begin to teach what they learnt and teachers learn what they have taught the children,” he said.

He said the school was elated to host the event because, “We have something to contribute to education in Nigeria.”

The British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Gill Atkinson, commended the students, adding “You are the future of Nigeria and the Commonwealth and with what I have seen today, Nigeria is in safe hands.”
