Some Civil society groups in Nigeria have requested that the federal and state governments make adequate allocations for women in the 2022 budget.
They said this is to give Nigerian women the opportunity to contribute their quota to the development of the country.
The CSOs revealed this during a session organised by the development Research and Projects Centre under the Partnership in Advancing Women in Economic Development at the 62nd conference of the Nigerian Economic Society in Abuja.
While speaking at the session, Barrister Vera Ndanusa, National President of the National Association of Women Entrepreneurs, said it is necessary for governments at all levels, including representatives of the people at the national assembly, to take advantage of the ongoing debate on the proposed 2022 budget to fulfil their commitments to empowering women in the country.
“Any nation that invests in women and empowers them economically, evidence has shown that nation has the opportunity of growth and stability more than the ones not investing,” she said
Alhaji Idris Muhammed, Director of Economic Services, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, applauded the organisers and assured that the federal government will continue to provide more investment for women as part of the vision of the administration that targets to remove 100 million people out of poverty by the end of 2023.
He noted that the Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen, is working hard to transform the ministry so that women economic development and opportunities in the public and private sector will be made easy through policy improvements.
The Director, Monitoring and Evaluation of the Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Dr Zakari Lawal, while emphasising the need to monitor and evaluate government investments at the states and federal level to ensure women get the desired chance to become self-reliant, disclosed that efforts have reached an advanced level to ensure all allocations are monitored to see how impactful they are on women.
