The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season, earlier scheduled to kick off on December 28 this year, will now begin on January 8, 2023.

The Interim Management Committee (IMC) established to rebrand the league which has remained stagnant for years due to bad management and insufficient finance has been holding meetings with key stakeholders to discuss how to improve the league.

The IMC and the clubs also agreed to go ahead with an abridged league format as against the usual full season format that has been used over the years.

It was learnt that after meeting, all parties agreed to the new start date for the league and are now eagerly looking forward to the draw on December 28, 2022.

It will also be recalled that the league ended in July after Rivers United won 23 games, drew 8, and lost 7 of their 38 league games as they claimed the 2021-22 league title with 10 points ahead of their closest rivals, Plateau United.

However, it was another painful experience for Nigerian representatives in the continent as all but Rivers United exited the CAF Inter-clubs competitions at the early stages.

The other three clubs were Plateau United in the Champions League and Remo Stars and Kwara United in the Confederation Cup.
