The one-day golf tournament organised by Media Trust Limited, publishers of Daily Trust will tee-off this morning, December 4, 2021, at the 18-hole Ibom Icon Golf Couse in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital.

At least, 110 amateur golfers have signed in for participation in the tournament, which promises to be a riveting experience for the participants, given the extensive preparations by the organisers, in partnership with the Ibom Icon Hotel & Golf Resort, to thrill those in attendance.

Part of the attraction for the golfers in this tournament is the mouth-watering offer of a return ticket for a golfing weekend in Kigali, the Rwandan capital, for the top winners in the men and ladies’ categories of the competition.

According to the General Manager, Business and Strategy, Daily Trust, Ahmed I. Shekarau, the tournament will accommodate the crème of Nigeria’s golf players, captains of industry and special guests for a weekend of exciting golf while promoting national unity.

“We made the conscious decision to promote the game of golf through the Daily Trust Golf Tournament because golf’s growing popularity among Nigeria’s prime movers has elevated the sport to a strategic meeting point for the elite class,” Shekarau said.

“Golf creates the opportunity for business networking and therefore serves as an ideal course to enhance the drive for the unity of purpose by citizens, especially at this challenging period for our country.”

He disclosed that numerous golf promoters from the public and private sectors have signified their interests in partnering with Daily Trust towards putting together a successful tournament.

According to Shekarau, the organisations that have signified interest in partnership with the newspaper company in hosting the tournament are the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), RwandAir, the Defence Headquarters, the Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Air Force, as well as the Akwa Ibom State Government.

He added that several golfers from Benin, Enugu, Kano, Port Harcourt, Abuja, Kaduna, Katsina and Lagos have either paid their entry fees or made commitments on their readiness to be part of the one-day tourney.

Shekarau said many of the golfers are excited about the prospects of winning the star prize in this tournament. The star prize for both the men and the ladies’ winner, is an all-expenses-paid golfing weekend in Kigali, Rwanda; 3-night stay in a 5-star hotel in Kigali; 2-rounds of golf at the Premier 18-hole Kigali Golf Club and a business class round-trip on Abuja-Kigali ticket on Rwanda Air.

The Daily Trust tourney is an amateur event, which debuted in 2018 in Abuja.
