The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday approved Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital as venue for the party’s convention slated for October 5 and 6.
The convention is where delegates across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) would elect the party’s presidential candidate for the 2019 general election.
Governor Nyesom Wike and the National Working Committee (NWC) had insisted that the venue of the convention must be Port Harcourt while the Board of Trustees (BoT) insisted it must be held in Abuja.
Addressing newsmen at the end of the 82 NEC meeting which lasted for several hours at the Wadata Plaza, in Abuja, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan said close to four thousand delegates were being expected at the convention.
“NEC resolved that we will be committing all our presidential aspirants to a bond on the outcome of the election.
“What this translate into is that all our aspirants will sign agreement with our party in order to ensure that the outcome of the national convention which the party has promised to be transparent, free, fair and acceptable to Nigerians must be accepted by all our aspirants,” he said.
The party, however, expressed fears that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with Prof. Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman and Mrs Amina Zakari as Director of Operations would not conduct free and fair elections in 2019.
