The Department of State Services (DSS) has said stakeholders in the transport and logistics sector must contribute to the security of the 2019 general elections.
The Director of the DSS, Institute for Security Studies (ISS), Ayodele Adeleke, made this known on Wednesday during the opening ceremony of a two-day Security Awareness Seminar for Critical Stakeholders held in Abuja.
He said stakeholders such as the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) among others, are critical to the security and success of the elections.
He noted that they are important in planning for the movement of materials and personnel in the election process and should not be undermined.
He said, “The seminar is designed to create awareness among critical stakeholders in transport and logistics sector, civil society organizations and the general populace on possible threats to the 2019 elections.”
He said the seminar is to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to forestall anticipated security challenges and contribute to the security of the elections.
He said central to credible elections is management and security of electoral personnel, CSOs, election materials, location, deployment and movement.
He noted that, “Critical stakeholders like you, need to recognize the centrality of their roles and discharge such responsibilities to ensure the security, integrity and credibility of the process.”
He said the DSS through organizing such seminar is taking all measures to contain potential threats to the electoral process.
