Twenty thousand rural women from Agaie, Wushishi and Gurara local government areas of Niger State have so far received N60, 000 grant each under the Nigeria for Women Project, (NFWP), a World Bank supported project, to improve the living conditions of women in the state.
The State Project Coordinator, Mohammed Bello, who disclosed this at a media roundtable on how to improve the livelihood of women in the state, said over N600 million has been saved by various women affinity groups that were formed under the project.

Bello, represented by the Procurement Officer, Malam Dauda Shekarau, said the group who operated as associations, gives out loans to members with financial needs to improve in their businesses.
He said the target of the project was to support 54,000 women in Niger State, but the state had exceeded the target as about 64,000 women have benefited from the project, adding that at the end of the project in May 2023, about 80,000 women would be captured.
He said Nigeria for Women Project was 100-million-dollar loan facility from the World Bank to six states to improve livelihoods for women in targeted areas in Nigeria.
He also explained that the project had three components such as; building social capacity, livelihoods programme, innovations and partnership, project management monitoring and evaluation and learning.
Earlier, the Team Leader for the Media, Bankole Ebisemiju, explained that the project was designed to elevate women to become self-sustained in their respective communities, lamenting that several barriers including culture and religion have continued to limit women’s access to improved means of livelihood.
