20-year-old man jailed 7 years for stealing phone, shirt, sandals

An Egor Magistrates’ Court in Edo State State has sentenced a 20-year-old man, Imade Ighhodaro, to seven years’ imprisonment for stealing phone, shirt, two laptops” and other items.
The court however gave the convict a fine option of N100,000.
The convict was arraigned on January 1, on a three-charge bordering on conspiracy and theft.
The prosecutor, Kpilibor Iralatei, had told the court that the convict and others at large committed the offence on November 30, at No 15, Idada Street, Ogida Quarters, Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.
He said the convict and others at large stole one Samsung Galaxy handset valued at N99,850 belonging to one Arierh Happy.
The prosecutor further told the court that the convict and others at large also stole one shirt valued at N25,000, sandals valued at N15,000, an Infinix handset worth NI17,000, MP3, N10,000; charger, N3,000; two palm slippers, N12,000; a pair of shoes, N14,000  and two laptops valued at N56,000 belonging to one Kelvin Nikhe.
According to him, one shirt and a pair of black shoes suspected to have been stolen were found in the convict’s possession and he couldn’t give a satisfactory account of them.
The accused pleaded not guilty and was granted bail.
At the resumed hearing, Magistrate J. Ogbeide, held that the prosecution was able to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced the convict to seven years’ imprisonment on the three-count charge.
He sentenced the convict to one year on count one with an option of N20,000 fine, three years’ imprisonment on count two with an option of N40,000 fine and three years’ imprisonment on count three with N40,000 fine.
