The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources in Kaduna state, Amina Sijuwade says the state government has procured solid waste management equipment for distribution to 20 locations in the state to curtail indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
Sijuwade disclosed this on Wednesday at the flag-off of the distribution of the equipment to the designated areas.
She said the measure will help address the issue of indiscriminate dumping of refuse on streets.
The equipment procured, according to her, include six rare-loading compacting trucks, four hook-lift truck and plastic receptacles.
She added that the equipment will be distributed to 20 locations that are highly vulnerable to indiscriminate dumping of refuse due to the economic activities being carried out in the areas.
The locations of distribution include Sabon-Tasha, Maraban Rido, Tudun-Wada, Barnawa, Kakuri, Central Market, Federal Government College (FGC) Malali fence, Badiko primary school fence, Badarawa, Kurmin Mashi by the express and Ungwar Rimi, among others.
She said the hook-lifts and the compacting trucks are leased out and handed over to Private Service Providers on hire purchase basis.
While she noted that the equipment will help gather waste in one place before evacuation to the designated dump sites; she urged the general public to make maximum use of the equipment.
The commissioner also appealed to the people to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in unauthorized places.
