The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has said that 20 chairmanship aspirants in Kano State have tested positive for multiple drugs during screening for the upcoming local government elections.
NDLEA’s Commander in the state, Abubakar Idris Ahmad, said the aspirants presented by the ruling NNPP in the state tested positive for substances including opioids, hemp benzodiazepines and nicotine.
Mr Ahmad noted that while no female aspirant had tested positive so far, the screening process was ongoing and that more candidates were expected to be tested before the final verification by the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC).
Daily Trust further reports that KANSIEC had scheduled the elections for October 26, 2024, where 44 chairmanship and 484 councillorship positions will be contested.
