2 killed in Jigawa farmers-herders clash

The Jigawa State police command has confirmed a violent clash between farmers and herders in Birnin Kudu Local Government Area, resulting in two fatalities, burning of three houses and the arrest of five persons.

Eyewitnesses reported that herders from Katsina State, invited by local counterparts, entered the area with a large herd of cattle, damaging farmlands in their path. This provoked a confrontation with local farmers, who mobilised to protect their land and livelihoods.

DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the public relations officer for the command, said the police, alongside the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) and the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), swiftly responded to the scene and dispersed the conflicting parties and recovered 15 abandoned cows.

He said the clash resulted in the loss of two lives, one from each group, and the destruction of three houses belonging to the indigenous herders.

“Five suspects implicated in the violence have been apprehended and are currently under investigation. The police have deployed tactical teams in collaboration with local vigilantes to maintain peace in the affected area and prevent further unrest,” he added.
