2 killed, 17 in hospital after eating poisoned food at wedding reception

Two persons have died and 17 more hospitalised after eating food served at a wedding in Katsina suspected to have been poisoned.

The deceased are 20-year-old Bilkisu Surajo, and Ibrahim Sani, aged 13, both of neighbouring Niger Republic.

The spokesman of police command in Katsina SP Gambo Isah said already two prime suspects have been arrested.

A police report said a 25-year-old man, Musa Suleiman, conspired with Shafa’atu Sirajo, aged 20, to administer a noxious substance, known in Hausa as Zaqami, in food to be served to guests at a wedding.

Both reside at the same address in Ali Yaba village of Mani council area of Katsina.

They have been arrested and confessed to being responsible.

A short confessional video released by police showed Shafa’atu admitting to being given rice and a bucket of water by Musa to cook rice for guests.

Musa also admitted to giving her the items but did not state his motives.

In another development,  On 7th and 9th April, 2020 between midnight and 5am, Operation Puff Adder foiled cattle rustling at Dan-Alhaji and Zamfarawa villages.

It arrested a 26-year-old Abubakar Maiunguwa Alti, of Dogon Dutsen Akata Fullani Camp, Batsari council area of Katsina and recovered a herd of cattle.

Alti has gained notoriety for banditry after he confessed to having taken part if attacks on villages in Batsari.
