Two friends, Aliyu Garba, 20 and Ahmed Nasir,17, were missing yesterday after running into the River Kaduna when policemen patrolled the river bank along Kinkinau in Tudun Wada.
The river bank is a relaxation spot in the area. Our correspondent learnt that the police went there when many people including Aliyu and Garba were relaxing and four boys ran into the river after seeing them. Two of the boys have not been found, and fishermen were searching for them at the time of filing this report yesterday.
The two others, Aminu Bashir and Hassan Adamu, said the boys did not commit any crime but were frightened by the way the police charged at them and decided to jump into the river in order to escape by swimming to the other side.
The fathers of the missing two said they would seek legal redress against the police.
Nura Mohammed (Ahmed’s father) said he wanted the policemen to face justice and would do all it takes to fight them in the law court.
Similarly, Alhaji Aminu Garba (Aliyu’s father) said he expected the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take action against the policemen, adding that he did not want any monetary compensation from the police because it would not bring back his son.
Police spokesman, DSP Abubakar Zubairu, the police were only on a routine crime prevention patrol along the river banks without knowledge that anyone got drowned as a result of their presence. He added that nobody called the police for any arrest and no one had reported the incident to the police. He however promised to investigate the matter.
