It said yesterday that statistics show that 267 road crashes were recorded, out of which 185 people were killed and 1,007 sustained injuries.
Speaking on a Christmas and New Year special patrol exercise designed to curtail road crashes, the Sector Command, Mr. Imoh Etuk, also noted that statistics showed that 90 per cent of road crashes were caused by human factors and expressed the need for attitude change by road users.
He said this attitude includes dangerous overtaking, wrongful overtaking, use of phone while driving, use of fairly used tires, failure to fasten seat belts and poor vehicular maintenance culture. He noted that if these attitudes are corrected, it would help mitigate the severity of fatalities in road crashes.
Etuk, who decried the attitude of road users, said this year’s Christmas and New Year Special Patrol exercise is geared towards reducing crashes to zero level. He also said FRSC had initiated strategies such as intelligence-based patrol, filling of dangerous black spots, posting of staff to bad portions of the road for traffic control, robust campaigns on radio, television, motor park rallies, domesticated churches and mosques advocacy to reduce carnage on the nation’s roads.
