The Bauchi State police command has confirmed the death of 18 people in canoe accident on River Buji, Itas Gadau Loca Government Area.
In a statement, the command’s public relations officer, DSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, disclosed that the victims included 16 children and two adults.
According to the statement, five people were rescued, but the person who paddled the canoe and one other passenger were still in coma.
Wakil explained that the canoe was carrying 23 farmers when it capsized.
Those who died were Abdulraham Shehu; Suwaiba Yusuf; Saude Abdulkarim; Fatima Maigari; Zuwaira Maigari; Hari Maigari; Hussaina Maigari; Ummani Abdulkarim and Halima Saminu.
Others include Najaatu Hamza; Nura Abdullahi; Yahuza Abdullahi; Hafsa Abdullahi; Sadiya Hashimu; Khadija Alhassan; Amina Idris; Kaltime Hudu; Furaira Malam Magaji.
“The corpses were removed from the river and taken to the General Hospital, Itas for postmortem examination. A medical doctor certified 18 persons dead while five were rescued, “the statement added
