171 women, youths benefit from Anambra skill acquisition programme

A total of 171 women, youths have successfully graduated from a one-year intensive training under the Skill Acquisition programme of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Children and Women Affairs in Anambra State.

The beneficiaries, comprising of 168 females and three males, were trained in various skills including clothing/textile, food and nutrition, computer education, art/craft and hairdressing/cosmetology.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, the commissioner, Ministry of Social Welfare, Children and Women Affairs, Dr. Victoria Chikwelu, said the centre has produced young entrepreneurs who are not only skillful, but have good morals and are marketable.

The commissioner urged them not to derail from what they were taught, adding that letters of recommendation written on them were meant to convince their would-be clients.

The governor of the state, Chief Willie Obiano, who was represented by his Senior Special Adviser on HIV/AIDS, Dr. Onyekachi Ibezim, commended the participants for their interest in the programme, saying their products could favourably compete in the international market in view of their quality.

Earlier, the principal of the centre, Mrs. Ogunwa Amaoyibo, urged the graduands to take advantage of the take-off grants offered to them to immediately set up their own businesses in order to put into practice the skills they acquired during the training.

One of the beneficiaries, Amuche  Obi, who was trained on food and nutrition as well as computer education expressed appreciation to the state government for creating the platform for the empowerment.

The occasion witnessed the exhibition of various products by the students as well as presentation of proficiency certificates and grants in aid to the beneficiaries.
