The Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS) task force team has arrested 16 illegal tax collectors who specialise in mounting illegal checkpoints in parts of the state.
The acting Chairman of BIRS, Emmanuel Agema, recently constituted the task force which comprises BIRS staff and security personnel to check the activities of the illegal tax collectors.
Our correspondent reports that the team clamped down on the 16 suspects on Sunday at different locations in Gwer East and Konshisha LGAs.
It was gathered that six of the illegal checkpoint operators were arrested in Wuese in Konshisha LGA, while the remaining 10 in Igbor in Gwer East LGA.
The spokesman of the BIRS acting chairman, Jacintha Benard, who also confirmed the arrest of three suspects who were in the habit of issuing fake receipts to taxpayers in Zaki Biam in Ukum LGA, pointed out that in a recent meeting between the management of BIRS and trade unions in the state, her boss made it clear that he would not tolerate the activities of illegal tax collectors who mounted checkpoints and issued fake receipts.
