The governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, has said that there are 1,545 inmates awaiting trial out of the 2,371 inmates in the five custodial centres in the state.
Mr Oborevwori, who disclosed this during the swearing in of seven-members of the State Advisory Council on the prerogative of mercy at Government House, Asaba, said that prerogative of mercy, sometimes called clemency or state pardon or amnesty, was a useful tool in the administration of criminal justice because it helped to decongest prisons.
