The FCT Police Command has paraded 152 scavengers, popularly known as baban bola, for allegedly engaging in various kinds of theft of household items and government property.

The Commissioner of Police (CP), Benneth Igweh, who paraded the suspects before newsmen at the former SARS office in Abuja on Thursday, said they were arrested in a coordinated raid on some black spots in Jabi, Karu, Mabushi, Jabi Daki-Biyu, among other criminal hideouts, in Abuja.

He said, “Some of these suspects hide under the guise of scavenging to commit crimes such as robbery and snatching of cars and motorcycles, which led our men to recover two guns during raids in black spots in Zuba and Dei-Dei.”

CP Igweh disclosed that earlier over 300 suspects who hid under the guise of scavenging were convicted by courts of law and remanded in prison, even as he said exhibits recovered from some of the suspects included daggers, axes, cutlasses, charms and knives.

While warning criminals to stay away from Abuja, he reiterated the command’s efforts towards tackling insecurity and other crimes in the territory.
