Twelve new cult groups have surfaced in different parts of Akwa Ibom State, the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Uwemedimo Nwoko, has said.
Speaking yesterday in Uyo, during a seminar for investigation police officers at the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, Nwoko said out of 113 cult related cases in the state, the police have secured 49 convictions while the rest are pending in court.
Nwoko told police officers that another group of cult members with different names from those that had been outlawed by government have surfaced.
He said the new groups have been operating from different council areas, adding that they recruited and initiated new members daily.
The AG, who did not mention the names of the cult groups, said his office was compiling the names and will wait to know more about them before taking legal steps against them.
Daily Trust reports that the state governor, Udom Emmanuel, four months ago banned 23 cult groups through the Anti-Cultism Law passed by the state house of assembly.
