12 die in Ondo accident

Barely five weeks after trailer accident claimed 10 lives close to the gate of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko in Ondo State, another trailer accident Saturday evening also killed no fewer than 12 people at the same spot.

A witness at the scene said among those crushed to death by the trailer carrying cement  were students of Adekunle Ajasin University and residents of the area.

According to the eyewitness the driver of the trailer, belonging to Dangote Cement, lost control and rammed into five shops killing people.

“We suddenly saw the trailer loaded with several bags of cement heading for the shops on the roadside.

“As it was going, the driver who must have lost control of the vehicle struggled with the steering because he was crushing everyone on his way. He couldn’t stop the vehicle. The trailer entered four shops killing everyone there

“The trailer also crushed a vehicle parked on the roadside beyond repair. When it eventually stopped, many people have been killed and covered with cement. Some people sustained serious injuries,” the witness said.

He said many of the survivors were badly wounded and were rushed to the hospital for  medical attention.

Residents of Akungba-Akoko had recently witnessed no fewer than four fatal accidents involving trucks and articulated vehicles.

Students of the university resumed academic session on Monday and the school authority had released the examination time table which made many of the students to resume quickly.

Contacted, the Ondo State Police Command spokesman, Tee-Leo Ikoro however confirmed the death of eight people. He said some of the victims sustained various degree of injuries, adding that it will be difficult to say exactly the number of casualty.
