A total of 12 female football clubs in Nigeria will take part in this year’s edition of Betsy Obaseki football tournament which will kick-off from September 7 to 17 in Edo state.

Addressing journalists yesterday in Benin City, the Vice Chairman, Board of Trustees, Betsy Obaseki Football Tournament and Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, said the participating teams include 10 clubs from the Nigeria Women Football League and two home-based clubs.

He said “The winner of the tournament will smile home with N5 million, second position N2.5 million, third position N1.5 million while the fourth position will get N750,000.

“Each participating team would get a consolation prize of N500,000 each. We are also providing accommodation for all the teams.

“Four venues, Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Western Boys High School, University of Benin Sport Complex and Edo State School of Health Technology would be used for the event”

“Last year we used the tournament to promote girl child education but this year we are using it to campaign against drug abuse and illicit trafficking”

Shaibu also said the 36 States First Ladies across the country would grace the event which he said would precede the commencement of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL).

The 10 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) clubs are Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, Delta Queens, Confluence Queens and Osun Babes.

Others are Rivers Angels, Sunshine Queens, Naija Ratels and Royal Queens. Home-based clubs Fortress Ladies FC and Brave Heart FC complete the lineup of 12 clubs for the tournament.

Bayelsa Queens were winners of the inaugural edition in 2021.
