108 students shortlisted for maths quiz

No fewer than 108 secondary school students have been shortlisted for the second stage of the 2015 Cowbell National Secondary School Mathematics Competition (NASSMAC).
The shortlisted junior and secondary school students were among the 34,000 that sat for this year’s edition of the competition across the country.
The second stage of the competition is expected to start this weekend, according to Mr. Festus Tettey, Head of Marketing, Promasidor Nigeria Limited, makers of Cowbell Milk and promoter of the competition.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lagos yesterday, Tettey said 54 of the students qualified from among the JSS3 students that participated in the first stage examination held earlier in the year while 54 students qualified from the senior category.
He disclosed that the quiz competition, which would be aired on 13 television stations across the country, would be on various topics, including Number and Numeration, Algebra, Geometry and Measuration, Statistics and Probability; Trigonometry as well as Introduction to Calculus.
He added that the second stage has been changed to an interactive quiz competition known as Cowbellpedia, which is endorsed by the National Examinations Council (NECO) in commemoration of the 15th anniversary of the sponsorship.
On the modality used before arriving at 54 successful students for each category, Tettey said the top 20 students from around the country were picked while the remaining 34 were representatives from the states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
Tettey noted that there was improvement on the second stage of the competition this year .
