1000 patients benefit from medical outreach

No fewer than 1000 people have benefited from a free two-day medical outreach by the Defence Headquarters in Bichi Local Government Area of Kano State.

The exercise, which was held at the Bichi Emirate, was carried out in the various communities of the emirate on ways of preventing diabetes, hypertension and other diseases.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, stated at the closing ceremony of the exercise, that hypertension and diabetes have become common diseases among adults in Nigeria, hence the need for the intervention.

Represented by the Commandant, Armed Forces Specialist Hospital, Kano, Col. Vincent Abu, Irabor said that the exercise was aimed at improving the health status of people at the grassroots.

According to him, the Defence Headquarters deployed medical personnel to facilitate the smooth conduct of the free medical treatment to the people in the area.

Among the services rendered include free medical screening, and distribution of drugs and mosquito nets to beneficiaries.

A medical consultant with the Department of Medicine at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Professor Oluko Andrew, who sensitised the patients on the ways of preventing diabetes, said the disease is one of the leading non-communicable diseases in Nigeria and preventive measures have to be employed.
