10 domestic airlines operated 74,537 flights conveying 12,050,264 passengers in 2021, according to the summary of flights operation obtained from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

Out of the 74, 537 flights, 41,328 flights representing 55 per cent were delayed while 542 flights were canceled.

This was coming amidst rising complaints from passengers over flight delays, which have worsened in recent times.

According to the 2021 flight operation report obtained by our correspondent, there were 1,086 reports of delayed or missing luggage while 1,082 were found.

The report indicated that 10 domestic carriers conveyed over 12m passengers comprising 5,977,927 inbounds and 6,072,337 outbound passengers.

This showed a marginal reduction in the number of passengers recorded in 2019 when air travel peaked at an all-time high of over 17m comprising both international and domestic.

Experts say the statistics showed an incredible recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 10 domestic carriers, which operated in 2021 include Aero Contractors, Arik Air, Azman Air, Dana Air, Overland, Air Peace, Max Air, Ibom Air, United Airlines and Green Africa.

The report indicated that Air Peace, which is the largest airline in terms of fleet size, operated the most flights with 17,861 followed by Ibom Air with 9,551 flights while Arik Air followed closely with 9,024 flights in the year under review.

Max Air operated 8,607 flights; Dana did 8,183 flights; Aero Contractors, 6,973; United Airlines, 6,408; Azman Air, 3,921; Overland, 2,917 and Green Africa, which came on board in October last year did 1,092 flights.

The report further indicated that there were 308 complaints received out of which 227 were resolved before the end of 2021.

Also, there were 281 cases of pilferage, discourtesy and complaints bordering on the ease of doing business.

Daily Trust reports that virtually all the domestic airlines had cases of flight delays with Overland leading with 84 per cent of its flights delayed. Azman and Dana Air had 64 per cent of their flights delayed while United Airlines had 63 per cent of the flights operated in the year under review delayed. Max Air also delayed 61 per cent of its flights.

While Arik Air delayed 57 per cent of its flights, Air Peace, which operates the highest number of flights per day, had 55 per cent of its flights last year delayed.

Aero Contractors delayed 54 per cent of its flights while Green Africa had 50 per cent of its flights delayed. Ibom Air on its part had the least percentage of flight delays with just 26 per cent of its flights delayed.

Speaking on the prevalence of delays, the Director-General of NCAA, Capt. Musa Nuhu said while delays could be inevitable in some instances owing to weather problems, the authority is doing everything possible to mitigate the delays.
