10 disqualified army applicants, others killed in Jigawa road crash

At least 21 persons have been confirmed dead in a road accident in Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

It was gathered that the accident happened on Sunday in Rabadi village along Gwaram-Basirka road.

Jigawa State Police Command said the accident occurred when a Toyota Hiace bus marked FYK 406 ZA with 18 passengers onboard and a Canter lorry fell into a broken culvert.

It said 21 persons were confirmed dead by medical personnel at the Basirka Hospital while one Simon Chinapi from Mubi, Adamawa State survived.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), SP Yusuf Wakili, said the victims were coming from Kano, where they went for recruitment screening into the Nigerian Army.

He said from documents found on the victims, eight of them were from Adamawa, while one each came from Taraba and Borno states.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Aliyu Tafida, directed a prompt and discreet investigation into the accident.

The state’s deputy governor, Umar Namadi, who led state officials to the scene of the incident, urged the emergency management agency and the police to get in touch with the relatives of the victims for prompt burial.
