10 die in Lagos auto crash

Ten persons including a baby were killed in an auto crash that occurred on Monday night at Iyana Yafin along the Mile 2-Badagry expressway in Lagos, while 12 other persons sustained varying degree of injuries.

Eye witnesses said that the accident occurred when two vehicles – an 18-seat commercial bus, fully loaded with passengers and a Mazda saloon car – collided. It was gathered that both vehicles burst into flame because of the impact of the collision, with the passengers trapped inside.

Fire fighters from the Lagos State Fire Service were able to rescue 12 of the victims of the accident, while the remaining 10 were not so lucky as they were burnt to death.

The commercial bus, with registration number KJA654XF, was said to be coming from the Seme end of the Badagry expressway. The driver was said to be driving against traffic from the Gbaji bridge in order to evade the road blocks mounted along the expressway.

"The collision sparked off an instant explosion and three people from the Mazda car, including the driver and seven people from the commercial bus, as well as the baby were completely burnt in the accident which created a traffic snarl that lasted for hours along the ever-busy road despite efforts by traffic managers to control it," an eye witness said.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed to our correspondent that the accident was caused by the driver of the commercial bus, who drove against traffic in a bid to avoid arrest by men of the Nigerian Customs Service .

FRSC Unit Commander for Badagry, Fatai Bakare, who confirmed the casualty rate, called for tougher sanctions against drivers who consciously and recklessly drive against traffic, thereby endangering the lives of other road users.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Dolapo Badmos, also confirmed the casualty figure, but added that the fire that followed the accident was caused by the ignition of the petrol-filled kegs loaded in one of the affected vehicles.
