A member of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, also known as Shi’ites, was reportedly shot dead yesterday during a clash with the police in Abuja.
The Nation quoted an eyewitness, who is also a member of the IMN, Yahaya Soje, as saying that the incident occurred when hundreds of IMN members gathered for a peaceful protest to commemorate the birth anniversary of their leader Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky.
He said the procession started in front of the Human Rights Commission, Maitama and that the police opened fire on them, leaving one person dead and several others injured.
He said those injured were taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical treatment.
The FCT Police Command was quoted to have stated that the Shiites went on a rampage destroying public property and attacking innocent citizens, including police officers with stones and other dangerous objects.
