1 killed, scores injured as thugs attack Bauchi market

One person was killed and scores of others injured when hoodlums numbering about 200 invaded Wunti Market in Bauchi, Bauch State.

Senior Special Assistant on Security to Bauchi State Governor, Umar Aliyu Shayi, who disclosed this yesterday while briefing journalists after arresting 25 members of the gang, explained that the miscreants whose ages were between 18 and 25 stormed the market and attacked traders with weapons.

Shayi, who is also the Commander of the Bauchi State Vigilante and Youth Empowerment Agency, said, “These miscreants you are seeing here were arrested while using force to snatch handsets, cash and other valuables from people inside the Wunti Market.

“My attention was called to what was happening and I mobilised my men and waylaid them at the Wunti Roundabout. They were about 200 holding weapons but we were able to arrest 25 of them.”

Shayi explained that, “They entered the stadium, venue of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential campaign rally on Tuesday, terrorised people by snatching cellphones and bags just as they injured many people with the dangerous weapons they held.

“At the end of the rally, they stormed the nearby Wunti Market with the intention of robbing the marketers and other people inside the market. The miscreants were armed with cutlasses, sticks, knives and other sharp objects which they used on their victims. I witnessed what they did as a woman was attacked in my presence. It was a pitiful sight.”

He assured that the arrested suspects would be handed over to the police.
