A young man was reportedly gunned down at a collation centre by security agents at Idah, the headquarters of Idah LGA of Kogi State during the just concluded House of Assembly election.

The incident was said to have happened on Sunday in the afternoon shortly after the arrival of two leaders of rival parties at the collation centre.

According to witnesses, trouble started when a popular leader of a political party in the area and one of the candidates contesting the assembly election met at the collating centre.

It was gathered that one of the party chieftains was at the collation centre with a retinue of aides in his bid to allegedly change the election results.

The duo was said to have engaged in an altercation which almost led to exchanging of blows, while presenting their complaints before the electoral officers at the collation centre.

“In the process, the supporters of both political chieftains started throwing stones at each other, and a security operative who was on electoral duty at the collation centre was hit, and he fired his gun.

“Yet, another version said while the security operatives were dispersing the irate electorate at the collation centre, the young man allegedly threw a stone at a security officer, who shot and killed the man,’’ another source said.

The deceased, said to be an orphan, has since been buried at Ogbogbo, his ancestral home in Igalamela/Odolu local government.

The Kogi State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP William Aya, did not respond to call and text message to that effect.
